Reflexive verbs express actions that a person does to themselves. They use reflexive pronouns and are far more common in Spanish than in English.

Reflexive Pronouns

  • me (myself), te (yourself), se (himself/herself/yourself formal)
  • nos (ourselves), os (yourselves), se (themselves/yourselves)

Common Reflexive Verbs

  • llamarse — to be called: Me llamo Ana.
  • levantarse — to get up: Me levanto a las 7.
  • acostarse — to go to bed
  • ducharse — to shower
  • vestirse — to get dressed
  • sentarse — to sit down
  • despertarse — to wake up

Placement of Reflexive Pronouns

  • Before conjugated verb: Me ducho por la mañana.
  • Attached to infinitive: Voy a ducharme.
  • Attached to gerund: Estoy duchándome.
