Question words (palabras interrogativas) all carry accent marks. They are used in direct and indirect questions.

The Essential Question Words

• ¿Qué? — What?
• ¿Quién? / ¿Quiénes? — Who? (singular / plural)
• ¿Cuándo? — When?
• ¿Dónde? — Where?
• ¿Adónde? — To where?
• ¿De dónde? — From where?
• ¿Por qué? — Why?
• ¿Cómo? — How?
• ¿Cuánto/a? — How much?
• ¿Cuántos/as? — How many?
• ¿Cuál? / ¿Cuáles? — Which?

¿Qué vs. ¿Cuál?

• ¿Qué es esto? — What is this? (asking for definition)
• ¿Cuál es tu número? — What is your number? (choosing from options)

Always use an inverted question mark ¿ at the beginning of a written question.
