Many of the most common Spanish verbs are irregular in the preterite. They share patterns and use a special set of endings.

Ser and Ir — Identical Preterite Forms

• fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fuisteis, fueron
• Context tells you which: Fui al mercado. (I went) vs. Fue un buen día. (It was)

Irregular Stems + Endings (-e, -iste, -o, -imos, -ieron)

• tener → tuv-: tuve, tuviste, tuvo...
• estar → estuv-: estuve, estuviste...
• poder → pud-: pude, pudiste...
• poner → pus-: puse, pusiste...
• saber → sup-: supe, supiste...
• venir → vin-: vine, viniste...
• hacer → hic-: hice, hiciste... (3rd sing: hizo)
• decir → dij-: dije, dijiste...

• Estuve en casa todo el día. — I was at home all day.
