Transitions — The Glue Between Sentences

Transition questions ask you to pick the word or phrase that best connects two ideas.

Categories:

Continuation: furthermore, moreover, additionally, in addition

Contrast: however, nevertheless, on the other hand, conversely

Cause/Effect: therefore, consequently, as a result, thus

Example: for instance, specifically, in particular

Summary: in short, ultimately, overall

Strategy:

1. Read the sentence BEFORE the blank

2. Read the sentence AFTER the blank

3. Determine the relationship: same direction? opposite? cause and effect?

4. Pick the transition that matches

Common trap: "However" is the most overused wrong answer. Only use it when there's a genuine contrast.
