Motivation is the force that energizes and directs behavior, but it is not a single thing. Some motivation is intrinsic, driven by interest, meaning, or mastery. Other motivation is extrinsic, driven by rewards, pressure, or consequences.
Understanding the difference matters. People can often sustain difficult effort much longer when actions feel personally meaningful rather than merely externally demanded. Motivation deepens when behavior connects to identity, not just obligation.
