Transcendental Meditation is a specific form of mantra meditation introduced to the West by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s and popularized in the 1960s after The Beatles famously studied with him in Rishikesh. Practitioners are given a personalized mantra — a meaningless sound — and instructed to silently repeat it for 20 minutes twice daily while sitting comfortably with eyes closed. TM is one of the most extensively studied meditation techniques, with research showing benefits for cardiovascular health, reduced anxiety, and improved cognitive function. It is practiced by an estimated 6 million people worldwide.
