Non-attachment (upadana in Pali) is not indifference — it is the capacity to fully engage with life without grasping for things to be different from how they are. Buddhist psychology identifies craving (for things to be a certain way) and aversion (pushing away what we don't want) as the root causes of suffering. Meditation cultivates non-attachment by repeatedly returning to present experience exactly as it is, without the habitual overlays of wanting and avoiding. Paradoxically, non-attachment often produces deeper engagement with life — when we stop grasping for experiences, we can be fully present for the ones we have.
