
Isaac Newton (1642-1727), born in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire, England, fundamentally transformed scientific understanding through his revolutionary theories of motion, gravity, and light. His work in Cambridge and London established the mathematical framework for classical mechanics.
Newton's framework explained that objects remain at rest or in motion unless acted upon by force, force equals mass times acceleration, and every action produces an equal and opposite reaction. These principles governed physics for more than 200 years.
In 1687, the Royal Society of London recognized Newton's achievements by publishing his Principia, establishing him as Europe's preeminent natural philosopher. His law of universal gravitation stated that gravitational force decreases proportionally with the square of distance between objects—measured at approximately 9.8 meters per second squared on Earth's surface.
Newton's synthesis of terrestrial and celestial mechanics created a unified mathematical description of the universe. His methodologies and laws became the foundation for engineering, astronomy, and industrial advancement throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
