Comparative Reading — Two Passages, One Topic

One of the four RC sets uses two shorter passages instead of one long passage.

Common question types:

How do the authors' views relate?

On which point would both authors agree/disagree?

How does Passage B's argument affect Passage A's claim?

Strategy:

1. Read Passage A. Note its main point and the author's stance.

2. Read Passage B. Note its main point and stance.

3. Before answering questions, identify: What do they agree on? Disagree on? Does one respond to the other?

The relationship is usually one of:

Agreement with different emphasis

Direct disagreement on a key point

Same topic, different methods or perspectives

One expands or qualifies the other's argument
