The Paleo diet (Paleolithic diet) is based on foods presumed to be eaten by early humans — before agriculture and food processing.

What the Paleo diet includes:

  • Meat, fish, seafood, eggs
  • Vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds
  • Some roots and tubers

What it excludes:

  • Grains, legumes, dairy
  • Refined sugar, processed oils, salt
  • All processed foods

Evidence:

  • Short-term studies show improvements in blood sugar, lipids, blood pressure
  • High in protein and fiber — satiating
  • Eliminates most ultra-processed food by default
  • Long-term outcomes poorly studied

Criticisms:

  • Eliminates legumes and whole grains — both strongly associated with longevity
  • "Paleo humans" ate widely varied diets depending on geography
  • Expensive and difficult to sustain
