Cholesterol is a waxy fat-like substance essential for cell membranes, hormone production, and vitamin D synthesis. The story is more nuanced than "high cholesterol is bad."

Types of cholesterol:

  • LDL (low-density lipoprotein) — "bad" cholesterol. Carries cholesterol to tissues. High LDL = higher cardiovascular risk.
  • HDL (high-density lipoprotein) — "good" cholesterol. Removes cholesterol from arteries. High HDL = protective.
  • Triglycerides — blood fats. High levels increase cardiovascular risk.
  • VLDL — carries triglycerides. Associated with metabolic syndrome.

Dietary cholesterol vs. blood cholesterol: Dietary cholesterol has less impact on blood cholesterol than saturated and trans fats. The egg controversy has largely been resolved — moderate egg consumption is fine for most people.

What raises LDL: Saturated fat, trans fat, excess calories, genetics (familial hypercholesterolemia).
