The Domain Name System (DNS) was created in 1983 to translate human-readable domain names into numerical IP addresses used by computers. Instead of remembering strings of numbers, users could type names like example.com. DNS made the internet dramatically easier to navigate and helped enable the rapid expansion of the web.
