Gunpowder began as a Chinese invention, but its long-term importance lay in how completely it changed military power. Fortifications that had stood for centuries became vulnerable to cannon fire. Armies reorganized around firearms and artillery, and political power shifted toward states that could finance and manufacture them at scale.
Gunpowder also accelerated the rise of centralized governments. Maintaining arsenals, supply chains, and trained troops required stronger bureaucracies and taxation systems. In that sense, gunpowder helped build the modern state as much as it changed the battlefield.
