Blaise Pascal's mechanical calculator showed that arithmetic operations could be automated by machine rather than performed entirely by hand. That was a conceptual leap as much as a mechanical one.

It suggested that parts of human reasoning could be translated into devices with gears and rules. In that sense, it belongs to the long prehistory of computing.
