Alan Turing helped define the intellectual foundations of computer science. His work on computability asked what problems a machine could, in principle, solve through formal operations.
Turing also played a major practical role in wartime codebreaking and later influenced ideas about artificial intelligence. Few figures did more to shape both the theory and the mythology of computing.
