AI in Everyday Technology

Artificial Intelligence has integrated into daily life through innovations developed since the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire. Today, AI systems operate in smartphones, smart home devices, and online platforms across the globe.

Key Technologies and Applications

  • Virtual Assistants - Amazon's Alexa (launched 2014) and Apple's Siri (2011) use natural language processing to understand voice commands
  • Recommendation Algorithms - Netflix and Spotify employ machine learning to suggest content based on user behavior
  • Facial Recognition - Implemented in smartphones since Apple's Face ID (2017) for security and authentication
  • Predictive Text - Google's search algorithms process over 8.5 billion searches daily using AI prediction models

IBM's Deep Blue, which defeated chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov in 1997 at the Intel PCA Building in New York City, demonstrated AI's computational capacity. More recently, Google DeepMind's AlphaGo defeated world champion Lee Sedol in Seoul, South Korea in 2016, winning the match 4-1.

Modern AI processes vast datasets to enhance user experience. Approximately 77% of devices worldwide contain some form of AI technology, from navigation systems in cars manufactured in Detroit and Tokyo to healthcare diagnostic tools in hospitals across Europe and Asia.

The field continues evolving through research institutions including MIT in Cambridge, Massachusetts and Stanford University in California.
