Freedom of speech protects the ability to express opinions, criticism, and dissent without fear of punishment by the state. Its importance lies not only in personal liberty but in the social value of open disagreement.
Ideas improve through challenge, and power becomes more dangerous when criticism is forbidden. Free speech does not solve every problem of public discourse, but without it, truth-seeking and accountability become far more fragile.
