
Biomass—especially wood—was humanity's foundational fuel for heating, cooking, and early industry. It powered homes and furnaces long before coal and oil dominated the scene.
But wood has limits: it is bulky, less energy-dense than fossil fuels, and can drive deforestation when demand rises. The search for denser, more scalable energy sources helped push history forward.
