Pokémon Red and Blue, released in Japan on February 27, 1996, and in North America on September 30, 1998, were developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy console. Created by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori, these games originated in Tokyo, Japan.
The games introduced players to the Kanto region, a fictional area inspired by the real Kanto region of Japan. Players caught and trained 151 Pokémon species, battling gym leaders across eight cities including Pewter City, Cerulean City, and Viridian City. The core mechanic involved turn-based combat between player-controlled creatures and opponent teams.
The International Game Developers Association honored Pokémon Red and Blue in 2008 as a milestone in handheld gaming. Sugimori's character designs and Tajiri's game mechanics fundamentally altered the handheld gaming market. These titles established Nintendo's dominance in portable gaming throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s, creating a franchise that remains active today.
