The West Wing, created by Aaron Sorkin for NBC, is a political drama set in a fictional Democratic presidential administration led by President Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen) — an idealized portrait of American governance that became a cultural touchstone for liberal politics. Sorkin's rapid-fire, walk-and-talk dialogue style, known as 'Sorkinese,' was enormously influential on television writing and spawned countless imitators. The show won the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series for four consecutive years (1999–2003) — a record it shared with Hill Street Blues. In an era of increasing political cynicism, The West Wing offered a vision of government as a place where smart, dedicated people try to do the right thing.
