Homeland, created by Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa for Showtime (adapted from the Israeli series Prisoners of War), stars Claire Danes as Carrie Mathison — a CIA officer with bipolar disorder — and Damian Lewis as Nicholas Brody, a Marine POW who may or may not have been turned by Al-Qaeda. The first two seasons created one of the most propulsive and psychologically complex thrillers in television history. Danes won the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of a character whose mental illness is presented with remarkable specificity and dignity — the first major TV protagonist defined by bipolar disorder.
