Fargo is an FX anthology series created by Noah Hawley, loosely inspired by the Coen Brothers' 1996 film. Each season tells a self-contained story set in the American Midwest with a rotating cast and a consistent tonal identity — black comedy, violence, moral simplicity warring with moral complexity, and ordinary people making catastrophically bad decisions. Season 1, with Billy Bob Thornton as the satanic drifter Lorne Malvo, is widely regarded as the finest first season of any anthology series. Season 4, starring Chris Rock in a dramatic turn as a 1950s Kansas City crime boss, demonstrated the show's remarkable range. Fargo has maintained extraordinary quality across all five seasons.
