Deadwood, created by David Milch for HBO, is a Western set in the lawless gold-mining camp of Deadwood, South Dakota in the 1870s — a place where a society is literally being built from scratch before our eyes. Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane lead a sprawling cast through a world of extraordinary moral complexity, political intrigue, and Shakespearean language (the show is famous for combining archaic rhetoric with torrential profanity). Canceled after three seasons due to disputes between Milch and HBO, Deadwood was given a feature-length finale film in 2019. It is consistently cited by television writers as the show they most admire from a craft perspective.
