Atlanta, created by Donald Glover for FX, defies genre classification — it is simultaneously a comedy, a surrealist art film, a social commentary on Black life in America, and a portrait of the Atlanta rap scene. Glover described it as 'Twin Peaks with rappers' and the show's willingness to follow characters into episodes that have no conventional narrative resolution — including a standalone episode set in a high school that has been compared to Get Out — made it one of the most formally adventurous shows of the 2010s. Brian Tyree Henry and Lakeith Stanfield give performances that are as good as anything on prestige television, and the show won the Golden Globe for Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy in its first season.
