Vertigo (1958), directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring James Stewart and Kim Novak, is a psychological thriller about a retired detective with a fear of heights who becomes dangerously obsessed with a mysterious woman he is hired to follow.
Hitchcock considered it his most personal film. Its themes of obsession, identity, and male fantasy have made it a touchstone for film scholars and filmmakers alike. It was a commercial disappointment on release before its full reappraisal decades later.
