Stalker (1979), directed by Andrei Tarkovsky, follows a guide who leads a writer and a scientist through a forbidden post-industrial wasteland called the Zone to reach a room that supposedly grants a person's deepest wish. Almost nothing happens. It is one of the most hypnotic films ever made.

Why It Matters

  • Shot in an abandoned chemical plant in Estonia — Tarkovsky and several crew members later died of illnesses possibly related to the toxic location
  • Tarkovsky's long, slow tracking shots through water, grass, and industrial ruin create a contemplative space unlike any other filmmaker
  • The Zone functions as a metaphor for the unconscious, for faith, for the unknowable — and refuses to resolve into a single reading

Tarkovsky had to reshoot the entire film after the original negative was destroyed in processing. The finished film is one of cinema's supreme meditations on desire, belief, and the terror of getting what you want.
