Rear Window (1954), directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring James Stewart and Grace Kelly, confines its protagonist to a wheelchair in a New York apartment where he begins spying on his neighbors through his rear window — and becomes convinced he has witnessed a murder.
Hitchcock himself described the film as his most cinematic work — the entire story told through what a man can see from one spot. It is the most precise encapsulation of what cinema is and does.
