Blade Runner (1982), directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer, is set in a dystopian 2019 Los Angeles where a detective must hunt down four escaped bioengineered humanoids. Hauer's improvised Tears in Rain monologue is one of cinema's most celebrated death scenes.
The question of whether Deckard is himself a replicant was deliberately left unresolved by Scott and has generated debate for four decades. The film was a box office failure on release and is now one of the most culturally influential films ever made.
