Falcon (Sam Wilson) is the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics — a Harlem social worker who bonded with a falcon named Redwing and partnered with Captain America using mechanical wings and later Wakandan hard-light constructs. Created by Stan Lee and Gene Colan in 1969, Sam Wilson later assumed the Captain America mantle and proved himself worthy of both the shield and the title. His partnership with Steve Rogers is one of Marvel's great friendships.
