Robert Fripp (1951–present), born in Wimborne, Dorset, England, is a guitarist and composer renowned for pioneering progressive rock and experimental music production techniques. He founded King Crimson in 1969 in London, which revolutionized guitar-driven rock through complex time signatures and virtuosic musicianship.
Fripp developed Soundscapes, a guitar performance method utilizing 40 feet of cable length for signal processing. He collaborated extensively with Brian Eno, producing ambient guitar textures on No Pussyfooting (1973) and Evening Star (1975).
Fripp received the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Composition in 1985. King Crimson's In the Court of the Crimson King (1969) remains a foundational progressive rock album, establishing the genre's technical standards. His fingerpicking technique and harmonic vocabulary influenced generations of avant-garde guitarists worldwide.
