Gilbert formed Racer X in Los Angeles in 1985, establishing himself as a leading figure in the shred guitar movement. The band's 1987 album Street Lethal demonstrated his finger-tapping and rapid-fire picking techniques. He joined Mr. Big in 1989, achieving mainstream success with the 1991 single "Green Tinted Sixties Mind."
Gilbert's technical prowess includes playing tempos exceeding 200 beats per minute with precision. His instructional videos and teaching methods have influenced generations of rock guitarists.
