
John Petrucci (born July 18, 1967, in Glen Ridge, New Jersey) is an American guitarist and founding member of the progressive metal band Dream Theater, established in 1985. He studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, and became renowned for his technical proficiency and complex compositions.
Petrucci employs sweeping and tapping techniques that demonstrate extraordinary dexterity. His compositions frequently exceed 10 minutes in length, featuring time signature changes and polyrhythmic structures. The song "Dance of Eternity" from Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999) contains approximately 140 time signature changes throughout its seven-minute duration.
In 2015, Petrucci received recognition as one of the greatest rock guitarists at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards in London, England. His influence extends through his instructional content and signature guitar endorsements with Ernie Ball Music Man.
