
Joe Satriani (born July 15, 1956, in Carle Place, New York) is an instrumental rock guitarist and composer known for virtuosic playing and pioneering the electric guitar as a lead voice without vocals. He began studying guitar at age 14 and later taught Steve Vai in Carle Place before relocating to Berkeley, California in 1978.
Satriani won a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance in 2008 for his album Professor Satchafunkilus and the Musteraic Masters. His albums have collectively sold over 10 million copies worldwide. He has performed at the Grammy Awards ceremony and toured internationally since the 1980s, bringing instrumental rock to mainstream audiences across North America, Europe, and Asia.
His teaching methods at his studio in Berkeley revolutionized how guitar technique is approached in contemporary music instruction, emphasizing speed, precision, and melodic composition for instrumental pieces.
