
James Hetfield (born 1963) in Downey, California, is the lead guitarist and vocalist of Metallica, founded in Los Angeles in 1981. His aggressive rhythm guitar technique and powerful vocal delivery defined heavy metal music from the 1980s onward.
Hetfield co-founded Metallica with drummer Lars Ulrich. The band released Master of Puppets (1986), which became one of the best-selling heavy metal albums, achieving multi-platinum status with over 30 million records sold worldwide. This album established Metallica as leaders of the thrash metal movement.
Hetfield received a Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance in 1991 for "One." Metallica was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, recognizing their contributions to rock and metal music. His signature downstroke picking technique remains a foundational method taught in guitar instruction worldwide.
