Whitey Bulger (1929–2018) was the leader of the Winter Hill Gang in South Boston and one of the most notorious criminals in American history — not just for his crimes but for his role as an FBI informant. He used his relationship with corrupt FBI agent John Connolly to eliminate rivals while the bureau protected him. He evaded capture for 16 years before being arrested in 2011. He was murdered by fellow inmates in 2018 at age 89.
