Vito Genovese (1897–1969) was one of the most ruthless Mafia bosses in American history, eventually seizing the title of Boss of All Bosses. He ordered the attempted murder of Frank Costello and had rival gangster Albert Anastasia killed to consolidate power. Despite his power, he was ultimately brought down by a drug trafficking conviction in 1959 and died in federal prison a decade later.
