
Salvatore Riina (1930–2017), known as Totò u Curtu (Shorty) and The Beast, was the supreme leader of the Sicilian Mafia and one of the most brutal gangsters in history. He spent 23 years as a fugitive before his arrest in 1993. He was responsible for the assassinations of judges Falcone and Borsellino, hundreds of murders, and a campaign of bombings against Italian cultural sites. He died in prison serving 26 consecutive life sentences.
