Salvatore Maranzano (1886–1931) won the Castellammarese War and declared himself the first Capo di tutti capi (Boss of All Bosses) of the American Mafia. He restructured the Mafia into the family system still in use today. His reign lasted just five months — Lucky Luciano had him murdered in September 1931 and replaced the single boss structure with the Commission.
