Pablo Escobar (1949–1993) was the founder and leader of the Medellín Cartel, at one point supplying 80% of the world's cocaine. At his peak, he was worth an estimated $30 billion, making him one of the richest criminals in history. His campaign of terror against the Colombian government — called plata o plomo (silver or lead) — resulted in the murders of judges, politicians, and police officers. He was killed by Colombian security forces in 1993.
