Lucky Luciano (1897–1962) reorganized the American Mafia into the powerful Commission structure that governed organized crime for decades. Born Salvatore Lucania in Sicily, he rose to become the most powerful mob boss in the United States, establishing the Five Families of New York. Deported to Italy in 1946, he continued to influence organized crime from abroad until his death.
