Joe Masseria (1886–1931) was one of the most powerful Mafia bosses in New York before Lucky Luciano had him murdered. Known as Joe the Boss, he led one side of the bloody Castellammarese War against Salvatore Maranzano. His own lieutenant, Luciano, arranged his assassination at a Coney Island restaurant in 1931, switching sides to end the war and then eliminating Maranzano to restructure the entire American Mafia.
