Giovanni Falcone (1939–1992) was not a gangster but the courageous Italian anti-Mafia magistrate whose work dismantling the Sicilian Mafia was so significant he belongs in any serious discussion of the world's gangsters. His maxi-trial of 1986–87 resulted in the conviction of 344 mafiosi. He was assassinated by the Sicilian Mafia in the Capaci bombing in May 1992, and became a symbol of resistance against organized crime throughout the world.
