Frank Lucas (1930–2019) was a Harlem drug lord who built a heroin empire by cutting out the Italian Mafia middlemen and smuggling pure heroin directly from Southeast Asia, famously hiding it in the coffins of American soldiers killed in Vietnam. His operation, known as Blue Magic, flooded New York with cheap, high-purity heroin in the early 1970s. His life story inspired the 2007 film American Gangster starring Denzel Washington.
