Frank Costello (1891–1973) was one of the most politically connected gangsters in American history, earning him the nickname Prime Minister of the Underworld. He cultivated relationships with politicians, judges, and police that gave the Mafia extraordinary influence over New York politics. He survived an assassination attempt ordered by Vito Genovese in 1957 and eventually retired from mob life, dying of natural causes at age 82.
