Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán (born 1957) was the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, one of the world's most powerful drug trafficking organizations. He became infamous for escaping from maximum-security Mexican prisons twice — once hidden in a laundry cart and once through a mile-long tunnel dug directly into his cell. Extradited to the United States in 2017, he was convicted in 2019 and sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.
