Dutch Schultz (1902–1935) was a powerful New York gangster who built his empire on bootleg beer during Prohibition before moving into the numbers racket in Harlem. Known for his erratic and violent behavior, he was ordered killed by the Mafia Commission after proposing to murder Special Prosecutor Thomas Dewey — a plan the other bosses feared would bring catastrophic government heat. He was shot in a Newark chophouse in 1935 and died the following day.
