Carlos Lehder (born 1949) was a co-founder of the Medellín Cartel alongside Pablo Escobar and revolutionized cocaine trafficking by using private aircraft to smuggle massive quantities of cocaine into the United States. He purchased Norman's Cay island in the Bahamas as a private smuggling base. Extradited to the US in 1987, he was convicted and sentenced to life plus 135 years, though his sentence was later reduced for cooperating against Manuel Noriega.
