Carlo Gambino (1902–1976) was the boss of what became the Gambino crime family and the inspiration for the character Vito Corleone in Mario Puzo's The Godfather. He rose to power by engineering the murder of Albert Anastasia in 1957 and consolidated control over New York organized crime. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he died of a heart attack at home, never having served significant prison time.
