
Ellsworth 'Bumpy' Johnson (1905–1968) was the most powerful African-American gangster in New York City, controlling the numbers racket in Harlem for decades. He negotiated a power-sharing arrangement with the Italian Mafia that allowed him to operate with relative autonomy, making him a unique figure in organized crime. He died of heart failure in 1968 and became a legendary figure in Harlem folklore, portrayed in multiple films and TV series.
