Bernardo Provenzano (1933–2016) was the head of the Sicilian Mafia who eluded Italian authorities for 43 years, making him one of the most wanted men in Europe. Unlike his predecessor Riina, he favored a low-profile strategy of sommergersi (submerging) over open conflict with the state. He communicated exclusively through handwritten notes called pizzini. When finally captured in 2006, he was found living in a shepherd's hut, barely recognizable.
